「接到國家京劇院的邀約，要為建黨百年創作一部京劇，時間是2020年9月，預定來年7月上演，時間很緊。此時全國各藝術院團，都為慶賀建黨百年創作新戲，類似的題材很多，有些籌備早的已經上演。這一部京劇，我要從什麼角度切入？我曾經寫過電影《決勝時刻》，講述1949年春，中共中央從西柏坡轉移進京，毛澤東和中共中央住進香山雙清別墅，指揮渡江戰役，推翻舊政權，解放全中國。為這部電影，我翻閱了大量史料，尤其關於毛澤東。我開始倒着想，時光回流到一百零二年前，那個時候，二十歲出頭的毛澤東是一個聰明大膽，好學上進的有為青年，他充滿活力，為救國救民，上下求索尋找真理，正如同逆境崛起的中國共產黨，也正像習近平總書記說的，恰似百年風華正茂。」
