One day last month, I retrieved my 8-year-old from a chess game at the library. She was sitting with a friend under the blue stained glass window near the fireplace. I have admired that glass wave since my own childhood, and standing there, I grew curious about the story behind the artist who created it, and marveled at how certain pieces of art add meaning to our lives across a lifetime.
While participating in the recent community discussions surrounding the inclusion of LGBTQ-oriented children’s books in the children’s section of the Homer Library, I heard several disparaging references made about drag queens and drag shows. My experience is that most people who make negative comments concerning the LGBTQ community members and lifestyles in general and drag queens and drag shows in particular, often do so out of ignorance but not necessarily malice.
Whether a local youth, teen or adult or a visitor to the area, there are so many reasons to love Homer any time of the year. For this Betster, like for many of you I’m sure, the summer season is an opportunity to soak up the sunshine, get out on the bay, fill my freezer with salmon and halibut, hike my favorite trails, tide pool, take late night walks on the beach, and chat with tourists as they meander the shops. It also means standing in line at restaurants and coffee shops, trying to find parking in town and on the Spit, and getting by on four to five hours of sleep. All part of this life I love in our tourist town.
