Methuen Police Chief Solomon to Retire; Says State IG Never Interviewed Him

Solomon, who has announced plans to retire as Methuen’s police chief, called accusations made against him by the state’s inspector general as “blatantly false.” Solomon, in a letter dated last Friday to Methuen Mayor Neil Perry said Inspector General Glenn A. Cunha’s office “never interviewed” him or gave the chief the “most basic common courtesy to respond to accusations.” “The impact that another long, drawn-out fight would have on the city, the department, and on my family is something I believe should be avoided at all costs,” Solomon said, appearing to reference his previous battles with the city.

Haverhill Schools, Union Agree to Develop System to Dictate What Triggers Learning Methods

Haverhill school administrators and the union representing educators plan to develop a new system to dictate when students and teachers move between remote, in-person or a combination of learning models. The Haverhill Education Association, in an email obtained by WHAV, said Friday a clear understanding of what coronavirus level triggers a certain model of learning is required by an agreement reached last fall between the union and school department. The union filed a grievance against the School Committee just before Christmas in an attempt to force a resolution.

Man Suffers Burns, Airlifted to Boston After Early Morning Downtown Haverhill Fire

A man, believed to have been smoking around an oxygen supply, was airlifted to a Boston hospital for treatment of burns after a downtown Haverhill fire early Sunday morning. The man’s identity was not disclosed, but Haverhill Fire Chief William F. Laliberty said an automatic fire alarm alerted firefighters just before 6 a.m., at the relatively new Wadleigh House for men at 170 Main St., Haverhill. “As firefighters gained access to the second-floor hallway, they were met by other occupants who responded to the fire alarm activation, noticed the smoke coming from one of the rooms. One of the occupants forced the door open and found the occupant of the room and removed the victim from the room where the fire was located,” according to a statement.

Ruth’s House has begun a new streamlined Clothing Referral program that allows persons in need to come directly to organization without having to going through a social service agency. The organization, which operates a Lafayette Square, Haverhill, thrift shop and provides clothing and employment training opportunities to individuals and families, said the only requirement of the new program is to bring a photo identification and proof of government assistance. Proof may be welfare, Medicare, food stamps, fuel assistance or related aid.
