FORMER Prime Minister Gordon Brown delivered a message to Harwich highlighting the importance of investing in children and young people. The address was made in a video created for the town’s mayor-making ceremony where former Labour MP Ivan Henderson was sworn in last Thursday. Mr Henderson served alongside the former PM in the Treasury as they developed child tax credits, Sure Start for the under fours, and a doubling of investments in schools. Addressing the town, Mr Brown said: “I am delighted to congratulate your new mayor Ivan Henderson and his mayoress councillor Jo Henderson as they assume their responsibilities.
HARWICH’s new mayor has expressed his pride at taking on the “privileged” role. Ivan Henderson, who has represented Harwich at all political levels, including as its first and only Labour MP, said he now feels he has completed the package. Having been elected to the town council in 1986, he went on to become a district and county councillor as well as serving as the town’s MP between 1997 and 2005. “Up until recently it’s not been one of my priorities,” he said, “but now I’m feeling excited. I’ve been in most levels of Government but never a mayor before.
