in the water, trying to piece together what could have caused this deadly crash. reporter: home security video captured the police helicopter spinning out of control, hitting the water and almost instantly sinking in newport beach. right away a frantic rescue began with locals, firefighters and lifeguards trying to save the two huntington beach police officers trapped underwater. one officer made it out. witnesses say he was distraught after emerging from the wreckage. officer nicholas vella, a 14 year department veteran died. in honor of officer vella, first responders lead a procession with his casket draped in an american flag as crews tried to determine what made the flight go down. across the country, hours earlier, another helicopter owned by a private aviation service, plunged into the water
