Gun shop ban not recommended by many council, planning officials

Wicked Local Two pivotal committees voted on June 21 to deny a ban on gun shops in Newton, which means they will not recommend the proposed ordinance to the full City Council. All members will vote on the measure July 12. The Zoning and Planning Committee  and the Planning and Development Board made the decisions during a public hearing. Most of the officials said they favored the restrictive gun shop zoning approved  June 2. A ban “provides no practical benefit to the current ordinance,” said Heather Tausig of the Newton Gun Violence Prevention Collaborative during the hearing. The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence earlier had asked the council not to ban shops entirely.

ASB begins $8 1 million in loan compensation payments to 73,000 borrowers

Kirk Hargreaves/Stuff ASB has sent emails to some of its borrowers to tell them they are in line for fee refunds of $68 or $135. ASB has begun making $8.1 million in compensation payments to around 73,000 borrowers who had home loans and personal loans with the bank between June 2015 and July 2019. The bank has sent emails subject line, “An important message about a payment to your account”, to customers entitled to the payments of either $68 or $135, depending on when they were charged. It follows a deal done with the Commerce Commission, which said ASB had agreed to pay the compensation for failing to exercise the care of a responsible lender by breaching the lender responsibility principles under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act.

Wellesley and Newton taking a look at zoning involving gun businesses

Newton MA: Gun shop ban unlikely; city council wants zoning regulation

How have other communities handled gun shop locations? For example, in Dedham there must be a 150-foot buffer from residential districts, schools, houses of worship, and many other locations. However, in Bloomington, Minn., firearm businesses must be 250 feet away from schools; in Contra Costa, Calif., they must be 500 feet from schools; and in Worcester, shooting ranges must be 1,000 feet from schools, to name a few. Most neighboring communities have no zoning in place for firearm businesses, including Boston, Waltham, Watertown, Needham, and Wellesley, among others. Many councilors said there must be equity in determining where firearms dealers could be located, and were concerned that only certain neighborhoods would be zoned for them.
