PORTLAND, Ore. May Day demonstrations took place throughout Portland on Saturday, and more are expected later in the day.
May 1 is International Workers Day, a traditional day for marches, demonstrations and rallies in the Portland area.
In the morning, dozens gathered at Holladay Park in Northeast Portland to support the PRO Act, a bill that expands various labor protections related to employees rights to organize and collectively bargain in the workplace.
May Day demonstrations played out across the city of Portland Saturday. Events were scheduled atHolladay Park, Downtown, Peninsula Park, Salmon Springs Fountain, and Shemanski Park at various times during the afternoon and evening. There was also a car caravan that made its way through downtown. Some demonstrations disrupted TriMet bus routes. For the most updated announcements on service disruptions, check online. It’s May Day 2021 and, per usual, Portlanders held serval events around the city focused on workers rights, the largest of which was a caravan for migrant workers’ rights that ended in front of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in Southwest Portland.
May Day, a nickname for May 1st, is International Workers Day, a holiday that is recognized by over 90 countries.
The migrant workers’ rights caravan and rally was led by International Migrants Alliance, a global alliance of organizations by and for migrants, refugees, and displaced peoples.
Police warn about May Day protests April 30 2021
According to the Portland Police Bureau, numerous activities are planned and no one has taken out a permit.
The Portland Police Bureau is warning the public about numerous potential disruptions in the city on Saturday, May 1, the traditional day of protests in the city.
According to the police, multiple gatherings are planned throughout the city. Demonstrations are scheduled to begin at noon and could last until evening.
At this time, there are no known plans or permits for street marches associated with any of the events, police said.
According to police, events are scheduled in Holladay Park, downtown, Peninsula Park, Salmon Springs Fountain, and Shemanski Park at various times during the afternoon and evening. There also is a known march/car caravan that may impact traffic downtown in the mid- to late afternoon. There may be other locations that are impacted as well since events can be fluid in nature.
