The first phase of a project to expand the First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles could be done in time to welcome in the Christmas season as part of the city s Holiday Homecoming event.
Plans to expand First Street Plaza continue to move forward. At the City Council s Government Services Committee meeting on Monday, aldermen unanimously recommended approving a $182,805 contract with a Professional Services Agreement with Serena Sturm Architects to prepare construction documents for the entire project, including phase one and phase two.
The project site is defined by Main Street on the north, Fox River on the east, the Alter Brewing building on the south and the entire First Street ROW from Main Street to Walnut Street. The St. Charles Initiative, an independent advisory committee under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, is raising funds for the project.

The annual St. Patrick s Celebration will look very different this year compared to previous years. It will have a decreased footprint due to health and safety restrictions from executive orders from the state guideline.
The St. Charles St. Patrick s Celebration, which will be held on Saturday, March 13, will not include the St. Patrick s Parade.
In place of the parade, the St. Charles Business Alliance will be hosting events around town, including a festive photo op area and roaming bagpipers.

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically decreased the annual hotel and motel tax revenue that helps fund organizations such as the St. Charles Business Alliance, but city officials agreed this week to fill the gap for the 2021-22 fiscal year by tapping into the city s general fund.
The city s aldermen voted unanimously Monday to allocate $698,600 to the alliance. The general fund will contribute $436,600, while $262,000 will come from Special Service Area funds, which is additional property taxes levied on commercial properties in the core of downtown and used to fund economic projects.
The city also approved $90,000 for the Visitors Cultural Commission.
