Alabama’s elected officials have embarrassed the state again, this time coaxing a failed coup and a vain attempt to overturn the results of a lawful election.
Meanwhile, the business leaders and so-called corporate citizens who fill their campaign coffers have been silent.
That’s no surprise. It’s their habit. But it has to change. Those elites we colloquially call the Big Mules of Alabama can help change our course if they want.

Despite the violent breach, congressional leaders were looking to continue the process of officially recognizing the results of the presidential election.

The U.S. Capitol was the scene of chaos on Wednesday, as supporters of President Trump responded to his call to head to the complex and then breached it, leading to unprecedented violence in the seat of America s federal government.
A woman was shot and killed during the assault on the Capitol, according to Washington, D.C., police. Her identity was not made public.

In an unprecedented reaction to the U.S. presidential elections, thousands of President Donald J. Trump’s supporters gathered Washington, D.C. Wednesday.
As Congress counted Electoral College votes, confirming President-elect Joe Biden’s win, Trump supporters pushed through the barriers at the front of the Capitol building. Although Capitol police attempted to quell the actions to break through, the numbers of those protesters involved made it difficult.
The building tension could be heard through those close to the president with his lawyer, Rudy Gulliani stating “Let’s have trial by combat,” and the president himself tweeting that “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution.”

WASHINGTON (AP) “Where are they?” a Trump supporter demanded in a crowd of dozens roaming the halls of the Capitol, bearing Trump flags and pounding on doors.
They lawmakers, staff members and more were hiding under tables, hunkered in lockdowns, saying prayers and seeing the fruits of the country’s divisions up close and violent.
Guns were drawn. A woman was shot and killed by police, and three others died in apparent medical emergencies. A Trump flag hung on the Capitol. The graceful Rotunda reeked of tear gas. Glass shattered.
