Nukumi, a mammoth-sized great white shark carrying a satellite tag, may have bypassed New Jersey in her migration route after having traveled the submarine canyons here last fall.
Her precise location is not known, though OCEARCH, the nonprofit research group that captured and tagged her Oct. 2, 2020, near the town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, believes she is near the Flemish Cap, 350 miles east of Newfoundland.
Chris Fischer, OCEARCH s expedition leader and founding chairman, said a tag that measures water temperature and depth popped off Nukumi and floated to the surface in the Cap. They also got a faint satellite reading from the SPOT tag on her dorsal fin putting her in the same area this week.
