Baby Albino Elephant Found Trapped in Snare Near Death, Now Thriving Thanks to Rescuers

Baby Albino Elephant Found Trapped in Snare Near Death, Now Thriving Thanks to Rescuers A baby albino elephant was found alone in the wild, trapped in a snare in January 2020 in South Africa. The infant was severely injured due to the restraint, and it was thought she might not live. Rescuers took in the dehydrated, starving calf, and took her into the care of the team at Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD), where she has since healed from her traumatic experience. Khanyisa was found with a snare wrapped around her neck, ears, and inside her mouth. The sharp wire had cut through her cheeks, leaving the infant with deep scarring.

Albino Elephant Calf Who Was Caught In A Snare Warms Hearts With Inspiring Recovery – InspireMore

When Khanyisa first came to Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) in South Africa, they weren’t sure she would make it. Adine Roode, the founder of the elephant orphanage, received a call in January about an albino elephant calf who had been wandering alone for days wrapped in a snare. Adine was amazed that she had survived that long, but Khanyisa was just beginning to prove how resilient she is! The poor calf needed special care for her injuries, sensitive pink skin, and bright blue eyes. Whenever she went outside, her carers held up umbrellas to protect her from the sun. They also had to keep her away from the other elephant residents at first so she had time to heal, but that didn’t stop Khanyisa from greeting them at the fence.
