State Senate Confirms 25 College And University Regents To Boards Across New Mexico NMHED News: SANTA FE Twenty-five highly-qualified New Mexicans have been nominated by Gov. Lujan Grisham and confirmed by the State Senate to serve on Boards of Regents at public colleges, universities, and special schools across the state. “This year’s cadre of regents includes individuals with a high level of experience and enthusiasm for higher education, which will be key for guiding our state institutions forward in the coming years,” Higher Education Department Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez said. “We look forward to collaborating with them and all higher education leadership to ensure that New Mexico’s students and schools succeed.”

Charles Edward Becknell Sr. vividly remembers growing up Black in Hobbs, where he worked as a caddy at a county club, knowing he could never be a member. “They wouldn’t even let me use the restroom,” says Becknell, 79. “I had to relieve myself in a ditch about 100 yards away from the club.” ...................... Playing on the predominantly white Hobbs High School basketball team just as the modern civil rights era was beginning, Becknell and the other Black players were not allowed to stay in the same hotels as the white players during away games.

In southeastern New Mexico, Johnny Cope defined the term “mover and shaker.” Cope, a longtime New Mexico businessman, died Dec. 13 in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 72. No cause of death was listed in a news release sent on behalf of friends and family. Cope’s business career was spent in southeastern New Mexico, where he owned an oil field service company and was involved in a variety of ventures related to the oil and gas industry. He was a noted philanthropist and helped launch the Johnny and Marty Cope Learning Center in Ruidoso, which connects youth to the Smithsonian Institution. He also donated to the athletic programs at the University of New Mexico and Texas Tech University and was involved with youth sports in Hobbs, where he was raised.
