Police: Suspect admits to meeting, killing autistic Bloomsburg woman

A 42-year-old man from Duncannon in Perry County was charged Sunday with homicide, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse after the body of Erica Shultz, Bloomsburg, was found in a wooded area east of Hobbie Road in Butler Twp. Harold David Haulman III admitted to killing Shultz, who was autistic and whom he met on an online dating site in November. He was taken into custody and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility following an arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Daniel O’Donnell in Drums. Haulman was denied bail because of the homicide charge and for being a threat to the public and himself, authorities said.

Luzerne County records 16 homicides in 2020

Sixteen people were victims of homicide in Luzerne County in 2020, according to the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office. The year’s cases included three people killed by family members, a shooting during a robbery and a suspect who was shot by the police. Guns were the preferred method of committing homicide, accounting for 11 of the cases. Physical assault was the cause of death in three of the cases, and another case was attributed to injuries sustained in a car crash. The number of homicides was up from the 12 people who were mortally wounded in Luzerne County in 2019, but was comparable to the total in other years — the county had 15 homicides in 2018, 16 in 2017 and 12 in 2016.

Police said she was autistic with the mental capacity of a 13- to 14-year-old and was believed to be in danger after she went missing. She was also diabetic, and her last known dose of her medication was taken the day she went missing, family members said.

UPDATE: Woman s body discovered today, man charged in Luzerne County murder

Dec 28, 2020 BLOOMSBURG — A 42-year old man faces criminal homicide, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse charges in connection with the abduction and murder of a 26-year old Bloomsburg woman. Harold David Haulman, III, who is listed on court documents as a transient with no permanent address, faces charges in the death of Erica Shultz, Luzerne County detective and former state trooper Cpl. Shawn Williams, the arresting officer, said. Police located the victim s body Sunday in Butler Township, Luzerne County. Investigators are now searching for murder weapons — a mallet hammer and knife — which may have been dropped near Milton.  Shultz was reported missing Dec. 4 by her sister, Erin. Williams said the investigation was initiated on Dec. 4 by the Bloomsburg Police Department when officers spoke to the Shultz family.
