Traditional healers trained to administer HIV testing and counseling to their patients significantly increased the proportion of patients receiving testing and linkage to care in rural Uganda, a researcher said.
In a cluster-randomized trial of 500 patients, 100% of those randomized to receive HIV counseling and testing from traditional healers consented to screening and were tested by their healer versus only 23% of those who were directed by their healer to go to a medical clinic for testing, reported Radhika Sundararajan, MD, of Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City.
Moreover, 10 participants in the intervention arm tested positive for HIV and seven of those were linked to care versus zero in the control arm.

jon. jon: they say this is pretty common. well, a senior counter terrorism official has told me in the past that it s not uncommon to pick up these operatives and what you find on their computers is that 90% of the hard drive is porn. i mean, just look at the example of the american cleric in yemen. anwar al-awlaki. when he lived here in the united states he was picked up three times for soliciting prostitutes. this is one of the mug shots for 1997. and also loitering around a school in san diego. he ultimately did community service. paid a fine and had some h.i.v. counseling. but when you talk to former and current fbi agents, what they say is this double life among these operatives is really pretty standard. jon: you have also learned something about what was apparently bin laden s final recording? in the last hour a u.s. official has confirmed to me audio message believed to be the last recording made by bin laden before his death was picked up and found in that compound. it
