have seen since that big ice storm that hit texas around this time last year. and in this case, dozens of major airports impacted, including some of the biggest hubs for the airlines. look at the breakdown here, dallas love field, the headquarters for southwest airlines, about 85% of all departures there canceled. austin, about three-quarters of all departured canceled. dfw, the biggest hub for american airlines, about half of all departures canceled. a quarter canceled at chicago o hare. the list goes on, cincinnati, columbus, st. louis, where southwest suspended operations just yesterday, a bit of good news here, though. airlines are proactively canceling these flights getting the word to passengers before they show up to airports and that causes more and more frustration. they have also issued travel wavers so that folks who want to change their flight and are impacted by this storm can free of charge, but we know chad myers in the weather center,
the story. at national reagan airport outside of d.c. and meteorologist jennifer gray will bring us the latest forecast. pete, you re up first. bad day to fly. bad day for travel. reporter: really bad day for travel, victor. this is the worst day for flight cancellations that we have seen in the last year. look at the latest numbers from flight aware. more than 4,800 flights now canceled nationwide. the last time we saw numbers close to this was during the big ice storm that hit texas around this time last year. this time the storm is crippling airports from texas all the way into the northeast including some of the mega hubs for the airline. look at the airport by airport breakdown. about 80% of all flights canceled, departing dallas love field, about three-quarters of all departures canceled out of austin. two-thirds of departures canceled out of dfw, dallas-fort worth, the biggest hub for

how do you think about both of those things? well we definitely need to do more about our grid. we have seen things that i never thought i d see in america, like during the ice and snowstorms that hit texas. you know, blackouts lasting to the point that american families were melting snow balls in bath tubs to flush toilets. that shouldn t happen in the united states of america. any way you cut it we need to improve the grid. we have to invest in electricity. may not seem sexy. but imagine what happens if we move toward having more frequent problems or outages. it s simply unacceptable, given how much we rely on a good strong electric grid to make it possible to do everything from doing your homework to charging a car, to going about your life. you ve said when you were mayor of south bend that you could repave every lane mile of street about every 100 years or something like that. correct. in normal times streets need repaycheck probably every 15 years. in times like this wher
they re doing. the 51 texas legislators met with members of congress and made their case. they are saying we can t do this without congress and the white house. do you get the sense that the white house will lead on this, including this idea of dealing with the filibuster as it relates to voting rights issues? well, as you know president biden has been really sort of muted in his talking about the filibuster and whether the senate should fully get rid of that or get rid of it for this particular bill. i think one really interesting thing that came up this week, you mentioned the texas democrats, they met with senator joe manchin of west virginia and came out of the meeting pleased that he had said, look, if we get back to the basics here and pass a stripped down version of this bill, not the huge bill, maybe we can pass something, maybe i would support something. there was some hope for the texas democrats that can go something could happen. but it s tough time right now. everybody s
