a very intense storm, may have been on the ground more than 50 miles. reporter: alabama residents describing the sound of the storm as something like no other. just out of nowhere i heard a sound i never heard before. it sounded like a freight train come through here. and the wind picked up so strong, i had to jump out and i ran because everything was shaking like never before. it s a sad day for selma. we ve got a lot of healing to do here. reporter: many roads are blocked with fallen trees and debris making it unsafe and difficult for some residents to get back to assess damage at their homes. i have not been able to get back there to see what it looks like. the road that leads to my house is blocked and i couldn t even go around it. reporter: in georgia, a 5-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle he was traveling in. unfortunately, a tragic night and morning in our state. reporter: tens of thousands
tore through the south. the coroner in alabama telling cnn that officials are now searching for bodies. one tornado hit selma, causing significant damage according to the mayor there. and at least 24 tornadoes so far tonight have been reported across the south, according to the national weather service. the governor of alabama, kay ivey declaring a state of emergency in six counties already. this is broader than one state. georgia governor brian kemp also declaring a state of emergency. nearly 200,000 people are also without power in alabama, georgia, and tennessee, as the story develops tonight. thank you so much for joining us. you can watch us any time on cnn go, but it is time flow for ac 360 with anderson cooper. good evening. there is breaking news tonight. new details on the first batch of obama era classified documents which were found back in november, but only acknowledged on monday. more on that shortly. this comes at the end of the day

that at least six people have been killed in your state. the coroner in autauga said they re finding more bodies this morning. where does the death toll stand right now. it was a death toll increased to seven. and search and rescue efforts continue. i spoke to ernie baguette, who is the ema director this morning and the reason that the search and rescue is continuing because of where the fatalities occurred, there was a combination of occupied and unoccupied dwellings or homes there and they want to make sure they go through all of the debris and account for any of the individuals that may have lived there. it is say horrible mess. a horrible mess. we ve been told that the tornados that hit selma was likely on the ground for 50 miles. i mean, the national weather service described it as being on the ground for a long time.
