this is all we had. we lost everything. we re with not one single thing. everything gone. tens of thousands of floridians will sleep in shelters tonight following the devastation of hurricane ian, which has now made landfall in south carolina. also tonight, putin s illegal annexation. he s unhinged, and he s dangerous. so how should the world respond? plus, the supreme court welcomes justice ketanji brown jackson ahead of what is expected to be another perilous term. it s about damn time we have a discussion about the right-wing freakout over lizzo and james madison s crystal flute. we begin tonight with hurricane ian. once again making landfall. this time on the coast of south carolina as a category 1 hurricane, the first to strike the state since 2016. the storm now a post tropical cyclone is expected to move across the carolinas tonight into tomorrow morning. the national hurricane center is warning of life-threatening storm surge and severe flooding. just take a
beach, all lit up. overnight, a much different view. so many families in the dark here. abc s chief national correspondent tom llamas on the effort to get the power back on and in many places, get the water running again. he s in ft. myers. reporter: tonight, an army of utility crews on a mission to restore power to more than 6.5 million florida customers. it absolutely could be weeks, if we have to rebuild parts of the system. reporter: those sparks, with irma hitting, a sign of the crisis to come. trees collapsing. power lines snapping like twigs. look at that power pole. it s split into two pieces. there are power lines all across the road. now, we re not sure if those are live wires, but we do know this. police aren t taking any chances. they ve set up a roadblock to make sure no one drives over those lines. last night was horrible. reporter: the fulbright family lost power just before irma hit ft. myers. they showed us the small gas generator keeping their refrigerator r
know. almost half, maybe even more than half, of all florida customers are without power right now. this thing still hasn t worked its way through some major, major population centers in florida. these are your storm surge warnings. you still have to worry about this. it is not nearly as serious on the east coast, southeastern coast, atlantic coast of the florida but there is some serious weather there and we ll take you there to show you how serious it is and a lot of damage. here in the keys we ve still got a lot of damage. our reporters are starting to move their way into the keys to see the kind of damage. but we ve still got high storm surges and heavy winds. this is where the storm is now. just about to hit ft. myers. it came aboard at marco island. the issue is what happened at ft. myers. will it weaken because it is over land as it gets toward tampa which is the biggest population center on the west coast of florida, the gulf coast of florida. these areas are still under hurric
silence peacefully. go back about seven hours ago, it ft the first encounter with police and a couple of youngsters at a mall just about five politics away from that church and it quickly escalated from a few police officers encountering a few youths to more youths showing up violence starting, more police showing up. all of a sudden a police officer is carried off obviously injured, thrown into the back of an armored personnel carrier. from there, it s degraded into what we ve seen. vehicles being set on fire businesses being trashed. and really throughout this whole day, it seems that the police have in a lot of instances been spectators rather than confronting them which might have enflamed the situation. it took members of the clergy to
seek shelter immediately. ft. hood is one of the largest military installations in the world. it covers 340 square miles. there are approximately 45,000 soldiers posted there. and the army post serves family members and retirees. the army base was also the scene of a mass shooting back in 2009. 13 people were killed and more than 30 were hurt in what was the deadliest attack on a domestic military installation in american history. and a short time ago, president obama speaking to reporters in chicago where he is traveling. we re heartbroken that something like this might have happened again. and i don t want to comment on the facts until i know exactly what has happened, but for now, i would just hope that everybody across the country is keeping the families and the community of ft. hood in our thoughts and in our prayers.
