but his father remained in the car, still armed and a potential danger to both police and to himself. simpson was resting his chin on the barrel of a revolver. in his deposition, simpson said he wasn t thinking about the police. even after spending hours evading them. he claims to have been focussed on someone else. by then i was in so much pain for nicole, i wasn t thinking about the police at that point. those weren t things being arrested was not something that was on my mind at that time. choppers with cameras continued to hover over the scene. beaming live pictures to the millions who were watching the lapd s every move. you got to understand the history of the lapd. there were people betting on us that we were going to fail and have a horrific outcome. and the folks that were there
there is the backdrop of what the past history of the lapd and many who say that perhaps he didn t get a fair shake, that the past racism that we know was an acknowledged problem in that police force. what do you say to those who have, in fact, some sympathy for this man and for what may have driven him to this crazy, you know, homicidal behavior. well, as usual, andrea, you hit it right on the head. i don t know why anybody would have sympathy for christopher dorner. look, our department is now almost 75% of color. latinos, african-americans, women, asian, 20% women. this is a department that is absolutely committed to constitutional policing, to community policing. that s why we re safer than any time since 1952, since i have been mayor. 40% drop in violent crime. watts, an area of the city that
i can t see myself as a cop. i really had a hard time with it. and it was really the thing that helped me more than anything, and i read all these books and documentaries and studied lapd and the history of the lapd, but it was spending time with those guys, bob and jerry, the guys who rode me around, and really because they were so cool i started to see the humanity in, you know in them and thinking, you know, i could be a cop. you want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same you want to be where everybody knows your name slightly different character than woody boyd back in the day. but again, this is a real-life major controversy for the lapd back in 98 to 2000, cops accused in bank robberies, stealing cocaine, framing people. kind of just a huge mess for the department.
