it s got to be stopped and i know better than most. and that s it, the south carolina republican forum hosted by senator jim demint. we want to welcome our viewers. i wolf blitzer in the situation room. donna brazill is with us. let s get immediate reaction to what we heard from the five republican candidates over the past two hours. donna, let me start with you. you re a good democrat. you heard from the five republicans. they re pretty much on most of the issues on the same page. a page being very different than the page that the president of the united states is on. south carolina will hold the first primary in the deep south next february. it s a very important state for the republicans. what you saw today is michelle bachmann, mitt romney, newt gingrich, ron paul, of course, and her main cain present the ideas to jim demint. he s a heavyweight, he s a tea party favorite, and what they were running today for was not president of theite, but president of the tea part
1:51 this afternoon. trust us on this, it feels a lot more dramatic than these pictures look, but take a look. this was inside the cnn studios as it rocked. in no time at all it seemed like everyone in d.c. was out on the sidewalk overloading cellular networks as they tried to get in touch with friends and family. the quake was centered in virginia, about 88 miles south of washington. people in new england even felt the shaking. now, the east coast is waiting to see where hurricane irene will hit. we ll get an update on that forecast in a little bit, but we want to start with the breaking news, and incredible pictures, out of libya today. in one of the most dramatic developments in the five months since the rebellion started, rebel fighters captured moammar gadhafi s compound in tripoli today. cnn s fred pleitgen joins us now, i know, in fact, you are in benghazi which is headquarters for the rebels and entirely rebel city for some time now. tell me, first, the reaction whe
talk about the impact of the storm. and alabama is just one of a few states affected by extreme weather. here s a look at pictures we just received of flooding in western tennessee. look at that. officials there are urging residents to be packed, actually, and ready to go in case of further flooding. british police have arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism near a nuclear plant in northeastern england. the men were arrested monday near the nuclear facility after their vehicle was stopped by police. all five are from london and in their 20s. authorities say there is no indication the incident is tied to the killing of osama bin laden. an ally of libya is now saying gadhafi s got to go. the turkish prime minister told reporters, a new period started in the history of libya. his words come a day after turkey closed its embassy in tripoli. citing security risks. until now, turkey has kept close ties with gadhafi, even helping to negotiate the four captured
in the country at the moment, and they reject the idea that saif al gadhafi taking over. that i think will cause some consternation for the regime. because they re not really coming up with another idea at the moment. part of what gadhafi wants to do, as i understand it from the sources we have, is see a safe transfer of power. the last thing he wants to see is that he hands over the country to somebody and then it goes downhill and goes into flames. this is his view. as i say, this is the narrative and the vision that they re locked in here, this is how they see it. and it isn t necessarily how the rest of the world sees it, but that s the point that they re coming from to negotiate on all of this. something else i learned interesting tonight as well is that gadhafi really does seem to be seriously considering himself moving out of power because he s already, from what i understand, thinking about his legacy here, how he is going to be remembered, how he is going to be enshrined into
