Exhibit delves into history of Black artisans and builders

The Shelby Star The Earl Scruggs Center will open its next exhibit honoring Black architects and builders in the state and the county in February. African American Builders and Architects, a traveling exhibition that explores buildings across North Carolina constructed by free Black artisans and slaves during the pre-Civil War era will open at the uptown Shelby museum on Feb. 6.  The Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina produced the exhibition in cooperation with the Gallery of Art & Design at North Carolina State University. The 25-panel exhibit explores the lives of the slave and free artisans and builders who worked in all areas of the building trade. Slaves trained some of these artisans informally, while others were apprentices for black and white masters. The owners of these slaves hoped that this training would make their slaves more valuable for sale or hire.
