I am delighted to be here today. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act and honoring the latino lawyers past, present, and future whose struggles and successes represent the vitality and of the root of the Civil Rights Movement. Congratulations to our honorees. You are a credit to the trail braze trail blazing latino lawyers without whom the professor would be talking after lunch. And congratulations to the h nba for putting on such a terrific conference. Respectful of those who have brought us to where we are today, inspiring to those of us who seeks to lead down, and supportive of those who will take us into the future. But an important reminder to us all, the Civil Rights Movement is not a static even from 50 years ago reported on a grainy blackandwhite newsreel. It is
Community. During my years as and americorps vista at the Los Angeles Free clinic i realize that where a child eats, sleeps, place, and goes to school profoundly impact self. I felt the gravity of poverty. I learned the power of resilience. My experience fundamentally changed me. I am now a pediatrician at uc s f Childrens Hospital oakland. [applause] i served a love. Twenty years ago i took a place to make our communities safer, smarter, and healthier. I carry this place with me every day. S. Americorps we elevate our nation by being an indispensable force club promoting resilience in the face of adversity. Together we strengthen american. As americorps and americorps alums we get things done. [applause] my experience and that of nearly 900,000 fellow americans would not have been possible without the wisdom of vision, and perseverance of president bill clinton. Project is to balance those protecting, protecting from risk, those persons who, where ones immigration status is going to bear on their ability to exercise their rights, but also recognizing that those are some of the most Vulnerable People and some of the people are being exploited, exploited the most, and so have the most recent to try to exercise those rights. At the outset of any of our cases, we do an analysis of whether, how is immigration status going to play a role. Sometimes the fact that a client is undocumented is actually going to be an element of the civil rights of use. You will have an employee who has been sexually harassed for years or even Sexual Assaulted for years because the employer has threatened to turn them over to ice, oftentimes what they will say. That will sort of beat somebody into submission, that sort of threat. We really keen on trying to make sure that we can give voice to those people, that at the same token, same time not putting them at some sort o
If iran doesnt feel part of the effort . They are already there. So they are already making an effort without being part of a coalition. Secondly, the government of iraq if they want to talk, which they obviously do, they can do it. Thats got to be the filter. It cant be direct conversations with iran for practical reasons. I believe. Im someone who very strongly believes we ought to be negotiating with iran on the nuclear side. Against some very strong opposition to even talking to iran on the nuclear side. That to me is the number one goal right now is to avoid that catastrophe of iran getting a Nuclear Weapon. And i think this could muddy that water and confuse and complicate those negotiations if in another area we are relying on iran, because i think it could help, it could raise their expectations somehow or other, it could affect what they calculate we might be willing to do on a nuclear side. I dont want them to change their calculus. I want them to know how serious we are. And
More acutely than we do in terms of their citizens having an easier route and path to travel to syria and iraq. They sare the same sense of threat. So the information that were able to share about individuals bhoove traveled to syria or iraq can be used to potentially add to our listing and screening systems and give us one a significant leg up in our effort to disrupt travel when the individuals seek to leave syria and iraq. Thats not a fail safe. Its by no means the only pillar of a defensive effort. Did sense of shared threat is so widely shared at all levels in the governments that we typically work with in europe and its making that level of interchange more robust than it ften is.
