Tokyo– Drinking green tea may help reduce multiple causes of death and prevent further cardiovascular problems among stroke and heart attack survivors, a new study suggests.
The research, published in the journal Stroke, also found daily coffee consumption helps heart attack survivors by lowering their risk of death after a heart attack and can prevent heart attacks or strokes in healthy individuals.
“There is a strong need for scientific evidence on the lifestyles among survivors of stroke and heart attack considering the rapidly aging population and the need to improve life expectancy following these cardiovascular events,” said researcher Hiroyasu Iso, Professor at Osaka University in Suita, Japan.

A cup of green tea or coffee every day can lower the risk of death for heart attack or stroke survivors and lower the risk of a heart attack in healthy people, study finds.
Researchers from Osaka University in Suita analysed data from more than 46,000 participants aged 40 to 79 who were part of the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study.
Volunteers were asked to fill in questionnaires on lifestyle, medical history and diet - including tea and coffee consumption.
The researchers then followed up with the participants around 20 years later.
When compared with people who rarely drink green tea, those stroke survivors who consume at least seven cups per day had a 62 per cent lower chance of dying.

THURSDAY, Feb. 4, 2021 (HealthDay News) If you have had a heart attack and a stroke, you might want to stock up on green tea.
New research from Japan finds survivors who drink plenty of green tea may live longer lives.
Stroke survivors who drank at least seven cups per day were 62% less likely to die during the study period, versus non-drinkers. Similarly, the risk was cut by 53% among heart attack survivors who downed that much tea.
Green tea was not the only beverage tied to longer life. For heart attack survivors as well as people with no cardiovascular problems moderate coffee intake was also linked to better survival.
