N. Ram flags spread of propaganda, fake news
Large parts of the media today are functioning as propaganda arms of the government and the “Hindu rashtra ideology”, said
The Hindu Publishing Group Director N. Ram.
Speaking during a panel discussion on the role of the media, organised by the media cell of St. Stephen’s College on Tuesday, Mr. Ram raised concerns over the propaganda as well as fake news seen in certain sections of the media.
“It is an understatement to say the media have not being doing their job. In fact they have been doing awful things in many places,” he said.
She was synonymous with affordable cancer care in India, says V-P People from different walks of life paid tribute to V. Shanta, chairperson of the Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, who passed away on January 19, during a virtual memorial service organised on Saturday.
Vice-President (V-P) M. Venkaiah Naidu said Dr. Shanta was “truly a legend in her lifetime”. “The country has lost an outstanding medical practitioner and a visionary institution builder,” Mr. Naidu said. She had become synonymous with affordable cancer care in India, he added.
“Hailing from a family of scientists, Dr. Shanta decided to dedicate herself to the cause of affordable cancer care in India,” the Vice-President said. Acknowledging that Dr. Shanta created the concept of paediatric oncology in the 1960s, he wished that the institute would continue her “exemplary effort” and become better by combining excellence and empathy.
There are still spaces where one can air strong opinions and fight repression, he says.
The present times should not be compared to the Emergency as there were still spaces where one could air strong opinions and fight repression, N. Ram, Director, The Hindu Publishing Group, said on Saturday.
He was speaking in a webinar organised by
Live Law on “Criminalising Journalism and Cinema”.
Mr. Ram said uneven implementation of law, and the higher judiciary, on more than one occasion, have failed to protect press freedom. “The recent arrests and filing of criminal cases against several journalists and also other creative persons, has exposed and widened the fault lines in our Constitution. We used to think we have pretty good protection, but actually we don t. There are many escape clauses in law which is aggravated by executive overreach and failure of the judiciary to adequately protect.”
