Dredge is originally from Manawatū, but before coming home last year he spent 14 years teaching in Australia. He started his teaching career at Feilding High School, his old school, then went to Australia and spent part of that time working in Aboriginal education. “They become whānau, very relational. A lot of it is about the grassroots of teaching. Sometimes it’s about going out under a tree, rather than [being] in the classroom.” He taught in Western Australia at Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields region, worked as a school consultant, then started at Perth high school, Hillside Christian College. The school had existed as a primary school, but he expanded it to secondary school.
