York Region residents who have reaped the liberties of a slightly less stringent version of pandemic lockdown than Toronto and Peel for the past few weeks were jolted into COVID reality on Friday, when it was announced that they too would be subject to grey-level restrictions as of early Monday morning.
And, it seems that as predicted, the latest announcement for York prompted residents to frantically get their shop on over the weekend while they still had the chance.
HBC avoids eviction at Ontario mall for now, but ordered to pay rent
The Canadian Press VIDEO SIGN OUT
TORONTO An Ontario judge has ordered Hudson s Bay Co. to pay half the rent owing at one of its department stores, while blocking a landlord s attempt to evict the iconic retailer.
The interim ruling comes after Oxford Properties Retail Holdings moved to evict HBC from the Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill, Ont., after seven months of unpaid rent.
HBC filed an injunction to stop the eviction, citing an earlier claim that Oxford which has a portfolio of malls including the Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto, and the Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, Ont. has failed to operate and maintain first class shopping centres.
. There can
be little doubt that the revenue from bricks and mortar retail
stores has been dramatically impacted by the pandemic. According to
HBC s Statement of Claim, however, negotiations with the
Landlords regarding the payment of rent were halted when the
Landlords surreptitiously commenced litigation against HBC in
Québec. The
Globe and Mail has reported that the Québec
lawsuit is part of a pattern of HBC s Landlords seeking court
orders for unpaid rent including cases in West Vancouver and Miami.
Recently, an interim decision of Justice Hainey in Ontario
prevented HBC s eviction from Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill.
