After the helicopter was ruled out, they sent 22 people up the mountain, all of whom worked to bring the man back down. They walked uphill through the Whakapapa ski area for about 2.5km before reaching the man, who Nesbit said they believed had slid about 80 to 100 metres down the mountain.

The Year 9 and 10 team, consisting of Simon de Vries, Lochy Shand, co-captains Sam Johnson and Nika Rayward, Tide Fa avae, Keala Manderson, Bree Fraser and Ethan Woods defied their inexperience as first-time competitors to finish runner-up in the 12-team field, which also included Waimea College.
