Salomonsky plans 12-story tower on Weiman’s Bakery site in Shockoe

Once eyed as part of the baseball stadium proposal in Shockoe Bottom, the former Weiman’s Bakery property at 127 N. 17th St. is being pitched for a 12-story tower.
Developer Louis Salomonsky filed plans with the city Friday for a redevelopment of the roughly half-acre site.
Plans call for an approximately 124-foot tower with 145 apartments at the corner of 17th and East Grace Street. The building would rise beside the existing Weiman’s structure, which would be incorporated into the development.
The rest of the site would be filled with a new two-story parking deck with commercial storefronts along 17th Street. The development would include a total of 85 parking spaces.

Public hearing items include rezoning and provisional-use permit requests for a 500-unit apartment development to replace the former JCPenney at Virginia Center Commons. The apartments would add to a larger redevelopment of the VCC site by Rebkee Co. and Shamin Hotels, which purchased the 7-acre department store building in January for $3 million.

The redevelopment of a Manchester warehouse and a Shockoe Bottom surface lot each took a step forward Monday.
The city’s Planning Commission recommended approval of rezoning requests for the Caravati’s warehouse in Manchester, as well as at 300 and 400 Oliver Hill Way in Shockoe Bottom.
The Caravati’s property spans five parcels across two acres near the intersection of East Second and Stockton streets in Manchester. Last year, the architectural salvage company listed its land for sale and by February had it under contract to a mystery buyer.
