RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA California Credit Union Tuesday invited college-bound students in Riverside, San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange counties to apply for its 2021 scholarship program.
The Glendale-based credit union awards 20 scholarships of $1,000 each annually to students in the four counties who are motivated in their academic studies and active in their schools and communities.
Since the creation of the program in 2005, the credit union has awarded more than $335,000 in scholarships.

For a 12th year in a row, the U.S. House and Senate will be considering the Democracy Restoration Act, legislation that would restore the right to vote in federal elections to all Americans who have been convicted of felonies but have completed their sentences of imprisonment.
Support for re-visiting the longstanding policy of felon disenfranchisement has been growing across the country. In the past year, jurisdictions including California, Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., all took action to reduce or remove denial of the vote to people convicted of felonies.
The practice of stripping the right to vote from those convicted of a felony has a long history in the United States. By the time of the Civil War, more than 20 states had enacted felon disenfranchisement statutes, and today 48 of the 50 states impose some kind of restriction on voting by convicted felons, either during the term of their incarceration, for a defined period afterwards

SACRAMENTO, CA California lifted a stay-at-home order in the 13-county Sacramento region Tuesday as hospital conditions improved, a rare turn of good news as the state pushes through what Gov. Gavin Newsom called its most intense surge of the coronavirus.
The order imposed Dec. 10 banned gatherings outside a household and shuttered or restricted many businesses. With virus cases and hospitalizations more stable now, the region can resume outdoor dining and worship services, reopen hair and nail salons and other businesses and increase capacity at retailers. Gatherings of up to three households are allowed.

MILFORD, MA Milford will soon join the dozens of other towns across Massachusetts that have changed from using the term Board of Selectmen to the gender-neutral Select Board.
Town Meeting approved the change during the Jan. 7 session after pushing the matter off the warrant last summer. The article was sponsored by member Lauren Wilton, who said the change could encourage more women to run for the town s top governing board. Any woman can run for Board of Selectmen, but the name implies she should not, Wilton said during the meeting.
