© Matt Humphrey Mid last year producer David Pugh tweeted out that one good way of ensuring regional theatres survived the pandemic was for star actors to commit to touring the regions. It appears that Ralph Fiennes heeded the memo, it s been a long while since an actor of his ilk has taken to the road, opening his one-man recital of TS Elliot s Four Quartets in Bath before touring the country. It is undeniably a good thing for the regions which have taken a battering and one worth getting to, especially if you can obtain a seat up close. What makes the evening worthwhile is being able to see his virtuosity up close. Every atom in his DNA seems finely calibrated towards delivering consistently excellent performance. Ann Dowd to Star in Solo Adaptation of Ibsen s Enemy of the People

(© David Gordon) Emmy winner Ann Dowd will return to the stage this summer in a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen s Enemy of the People, adapted and directed by Robert Icke. The production will run at the Park Avenue Armory June 22-July 25, with opening night set for June 30. Commissioned by the Armory, developed during the pandemic, and with Dowd playing all the characters, the play centers on a small former manufacturing town that has been revitalized as a resort destination due to its natural hot springs. When a scientist, who is the sister of the town s Mayor, finds that the water is contaminated and the baths must be shut down, a democratic society confronts, in public and in private, a complex ethical crisis. The audience, sitting in pods of friends or family, will be invited to vote at critical moments of the story – and the majority vote will determine the play s direction at each juncture.

The show will be performed from May 25 to June 5. Ralph Fiennes’ distinguished stage work is matched by performances in some of the greatest films of our time, winning of a Tony Award for playing Hamlet and appearing in films such as Harry Potter, Schindler’s List and In Bruges Four Quartets is directed by Fiennes, who is joined by a creative team including Hildegard Bechtler (designer) who won an Olivier Award for After The Dance at the National Theatre and received nominations for Top Hat and Oresteia; Tim Lutkin (lighting), winner of an Olivier Award for Chimerica and Christopher Shutt (sound), winner of a Tony Award for War Horse.
