I was one of the lucky people to be Pfizered at 1 Discovery Place this week. It was an experience to remember, in the best way. The vaccine centre Discovery has put in place at its vast but currently almost empty Sandton headquarters is well designed and well resourced, with a warm and welcoming fleet of queue marshals and vaccinators who were efficient and expert.

Last year mining giant Rio Tinto s then CEO Jean-Sébastien Jacques and two executives were forced out by an investor backlash over the company s destruction of Aboriginal people s sacred sites in Australia to expand its flagship iron ore mine. Last month Rio Tinto s chair, Simon Thompson, took the fall for the fiasco too, saying he would step down in the next year.
Don t hold your breath for anything like that in SA. Chairs and boards of SA s big companies have it easy when it comes to hiring and firing.

We all agree on what to do. We just have to implement. How often have we heard that? The narrative, in private and public sectors, is that the policies are in place on the structural reforms needed to lift SA out of its economic stagnation. The problem is just the lack of implementation - not to mention its evil twin, the lack of capacity in the government. But it s not nearly that simple. Too often, the promises of reforms in the president s state of the nation speeches or in the economic plans announced by the government are no more than high-level commitments.
