Communities and veterans organizations will return to the cemetery this Memorial Day to honor their fallen servicemen and women.
COVID-19 concerns caused many communities to cancel last year’s Memorial Day events or limit their activities. Some of those communities will be bringing back their parades while most will reopen up the ceremonies to the public.
Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May. This year it is May 31.

A Wooster High School senior was selected as this year s Wooster-Wayne Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution s top Good Citizen.
Lena Wiebe, daughter of Mareike Herrmann, received a plaque and a scholarship. Her name will be added to a trophy that is displayed at the winner’s high school until next year’s Good Citizen is chosen.
Part of the Good Citizen competition is an essay. Included in hers, Wiebe said: “Every step forward this country has taken has been the result of dedicated, caring citizens who want their government to represent them. The United States was founded by small bands of patriots who wanted their voice to be heard.

MORRISTOWN With an undersized St. Clairsville squad coming to town Thursday night, Union Local Head Coach Rob Barr was hoping for his talented inside players to show some physicality and dominate while getting ready for a big matchup with Waynedale on Saturday morning. Unfortunately for Coach Stacey Agnew and his Lady Red Devils, Barr got exactly what he was looking for as 6-ft. sophomores Reagan Vinskovich and Torre Kildow were nearly unstoppable under the basket and his Lady Jets outrebounded their guests by a 50-14 margin while dropping in 26 second-chance points.
BERLIN TOWNSHIP A premier high school basketball event in the country, Classic in the Country has taken a major hit this year. But Classic coordinators are pleased to be able to continue to play the games, even if it is a scaled down event.
Classic in the Country is preparing for its 18th annual showcase Jan. 16-18, over the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend, featuring 20 games. Since the inaugural event in 2004, more than 1,000 college coaches and 300,000 fans have descended upon the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center at Hiland High School to see a collection of some of the best high school girls basketball players in the country go at it in an atmosphere that celebrates competition and diversity.
