Photo / FNDC Northern Advocate Te Hiku Community Board has awarded grants of almost $50,000 in support of heritage, sport and conservation fundraising projects in Te Hiku Ward, including a $20,000 contribution towards the ongoing restoration of St Clement s Anglican Māori Church (Te Whare Tapu o Keremeneta) at Ahipara. Time and the elements have taken their toll on the almost 150 years old church, which is now in a state of disrepair. Restoration committee chairman John Paitai says the aim is to restore it to its original 19th century appearance, and so provide the community with a revived venue and focus point for local faith, history and events.

It is part of the Jaycee/Centennial Park development project, which has already seen footpaths widened to improve accessibility. The $18,000 Australian-made Liberty swing, one of three that will be installed around the Far North, one in the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa ward and the third in the Kaikohe-Hokianga ward, allows wheelchair users to gain maximum height, as opposed to simply rocking back and forth. It includes an access ramp, a moulded plastic capsule with an internal steel frame, and a seatbelt to secure the wheelchair.
