落石のため通行止めが１０年続く国道４８８号
益田市中心部から４８８号に入り、西中国山地国定公園の渓谷沿いに車を走らせて約１時間。「全面通行止」と書かれた看板が突如、現れる。島根県は２０１１年４月２８日、この区間を通行止めにした。４、５月に大規模な落石の発生があった。
県道路建設課企画調査グループによると、１１年以降、沿線の益田市、広島県、廿日市市と相談して解決策を模索してきた。しかし三つの選択肢はいずれも難しく、同グループは「なかなかすぐに対応が進められないのが現状」とする。
