My dad’s trainspotting days are mostly a thing of the past now. He sometimes snoozes in the afternoon over a copy of Rail magazine but it’s a far cry from his youth spent loitering on railway bridges clutching a pencil and his Ian Allan ABC of Locomotives – a trainspotter’s manual.
After so long cooped up at home, I’m encouraging him to share his love of locomotives with my children this summer as heritage railways around the country reopen and furnaces are stoked red-hot once again. What easier way could there be for families, and especially grandparents, to entertain children than sitting down for a ride?

Itâs never been the colour which it takes its name from, but its original version was a key asset in the growth of Inverness, and last Friday was the 125th anniversary of its opening.
Mrs MacBean, wife of Provost William MacBean, performed the inaugural ceremony as the five-span grey-blue lattice-girder Waterloo Bridge, standing on iron columns and fashioned by the Rose Street Foundry, came into service.

A voluntary group which runs scenic steam engine trips through the Spey Valley has received a huge cash boost to help cope with the effects of the Covid crisis.
The Strathspey Railway Company normally runs 20-minute services of three trains each timetabled day from April to October, with an extra dining train on Friday evening and for Sunday lunch.
Now the organisation has received £57,700 from the Historic Environment Recovery Fund, which has given out almost £2 million in grants to more than 40 groups to cope with the financial struggles caused by the pandemic.

This year marks the centenary of Invernessâs civil engineering icon Sir Murdoch MacDonald ending his 23-year connection with the Egyptian government as an expert on major dams and irrigation projects.
He would go on to be MP for Inverness â and to persuade the secretary of state for Scotland to issue an order to protect the Loch Ness Monster!
