Pope, Grand Imam of Al Azhar congratulate recipients of Zayed Award for Human Fraternity

Abu Dhabi: The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity held its annual award ceremony today with messages of congratulations conveyed to the 2021 recpients by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmed Al-Tayeb – the 2019 honorees. Recognised for their respective efforts to advocate for peaceful resolution to conflict and advocacy of values outlined in the Document on Human Fraternity, both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Moroccan-French activist, Latifa Ibn Ziaten, were presented as the two honorees of the 2021 award. Anchored around the picturesque setting of the Founder’s Memorial, in Abu Dhabi, the awards ceremony included the acceptance speeches of the two honorees, along with messages from Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr Ahmed Al-Tayeb.

Abu Dhabi: António Guterres, the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations, who took office on January 1, 2017 and Latifa ibn Ziaten, a French of Moroccan origin campaigner against radicalisation of young French Arabs, won the 2020 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, The Higher Committee for Human Fraternity (HCHF) announced on Wednesday. The award presentation ceremony will be virtually held at the Founder’s Memorial on Thursday, in the presence of Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr Ahmad al Tayeb and the winners. The award, created in 2019 to recognise outstanding work by individuals or entities in creating breakthroughs and driving human progress, has previously been awarded to Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr Ahmad al Tayeb.

@ZayedAward/ Twitter U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Moroccan-French activist, Latifa Ibn Ziaten, are the joint winners of the 2021 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. The global award recognises individuals who are committed to fostering conditions for peaceful co-existence, and is aligned to the humanitarian values shared by the UAE’s founder, the late Sheikh Zayed. It was created following the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity (DHF), by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al Sharif, Dr Ahmed el-Tayeb, and the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, in Abu Dhabi, in 2019. Latifa Ibn Ziaten is a mother and Moroccan-French activist, dedicated to raising awareness against escalating religious extremism, following her own personal tragedy of losing her son, Imad, to a terrorist attack, in 2012.
