SIR – It was good to read the Countess of Carnarvon’s common-sense arguments about farming and the environment (“Happy farmers keep our environment healthy”, Comment, December 27). While rewilding is important, the food we eat is even more so, and we need to grow as much as we can to be self-sufficient and not rely on importing from elsewhere – with the consequent effects on the environment. Sheep, cows, goats, pigs and chickens are all variously blamed for their contribution towards climate change. Those who are against eating meat are vocal in their insistence on this issue, but the data does not necessarily support their argument.
