The first thing I realise: this holiday has lots of spare wheels. There are more than 15 in the production team, with everything from camera operators, a director, makeup, a health and safety officer and a drone operator. The McCaws are unfazed; they are here to discover a new part of the country – the more, the merrier. The first part of their weekend involves going deep into Jurassic rainforest on a trip to the oldest hut in Fiordland National Park. It starts with a scenic 40-minute cruise across Lake Te Anau, the South Island s biggest lake. Richie and Gemma spend most of the time with their eyes glued outside as glacier-carved mountains launch out of the lake into the clouds. It feels unworldly.
