Bishop s Basilica of Philippopolis in Bulgaria s Plovdiv opens to public on April 19

The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, site of a Christian church estimated to date from the fourth century and which boasts 2000 square metres of beautiful mosaics, opens to the public on April 19 at 9am. An official opening ceremony was held on April 18, with attendance limited because of anti-epidemic precautions. The event was streamed live on Facebook. The ceremony was addressed by Plovdiv mayor Zdravko Dimitrov, US ambassador Herro Mustafa and the head of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, Nancy Schiller. The opening is the culmination of seven years of preservation and restoration work, and the construction of a special structure over the site.

News European Court of Human Rights rules against Bulgaria in discrimination cases involving politician Volen Siderov published on 2/16/21 5:19 PM Photo: Library The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled against Bulgaria over public statements made by the leader of the nationalist Ataka party, Volen Siderov, which were not considered discriminatory by Bulgarian courts. These are Siderov s speeches from 15 years ago, when he was elected MP, BNR reported.  The convictions are on two cases, referring to Siderov s systematic anti-Semitic and anti-Roma rhetoric. No compensation has been awarded in either case. Bulgaria has been ordered to pay only the legal costs of the cases, which amount to nearly 5,700 euros.
