Havas Ortega Philippines signs with UN commitment for gender equality

February 3 2021, 11:28 am | BY Kim Shaw | No Comments Havas Ortega Group became the first Filipino communications firm to sign the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), raising the total number of WEPs signatories to 23 across the country. The company joins more than 4,300 businesses worldwide in taking more visible steps to open opportunities for women in the workplace, marketplace and community, a main goal of UN Women’s WeEmpowerAsia programme.   “Havas Ortega believes that gender equality is a prerequisite for a sustainable business. As a company that owes its success to its people, it would be incongruous to aim for business excellence while part of that workforce is hindered by archaic gender norms and workplace harassment,” said Jos Ortega (pictured right), CEO of the Havas Ortega Group.

Human rights group alarmed over attacks on peasant workers

Published January 28, 2021, 2:46 PM A human rights group said Thursday it is alarmed by the continuous attacks on peasant workers in Hacienda Yulo in Laguna and Isabela. Karapatan made the statement following the reported threats, harassment, and arrests being experienced by farmers in these areas. “Like the majority of the populace, what they need most now is assistance, support, and ultimately, the right to land and life. However, there has been no letup from life-threatening attacks they experience, whether from State forces or armed security and goons of local landlords,” Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay said. Palabay was referring to the accounts posted by Defend Yulo Farmers on Facebook which said that attacks by armed men against Hacienda Yulo farmers in Sitio Buntog in Barangay Canlubang have escalated.
