The dust seems to have settled after a spat on social media about the Hermanus Country Market, which was due to be shut down permanently but instead has been given the green light temporarily.
Liza van Coppenhagen, organiser of the market, had sent a letter out to traders on 3 January informing them of the permanent closure of the market.
She explained that the market is no longer sustainable because during the first lockdown period from March until August last year the market could not operate, but the costs remained the same – with no reductions in rental or insurance except for electricity usage. “The costs amounted to just over R180 000 over this period with no income,” reads the letter.
