KUALA LUMPUR. Malaysia has cautioned investors against participating in social media chatrooms that promote trading of certain stocks after online forums fuelled a surge in Malaysian glove makers, similar to the phenomenom seen in the United States in recent days.
Shares of Top Glove, the world s largest medical glove maker, rose 8.5% on Friday after a call by local retail investors to drive up its share prices and squeeze out short sellers.
In a Reddit forum, Malaysian investors said they were drawing inspiration from another Reddit forum called WallStreetBets that is believed to have fuelled a surge in U.S. company GameStop.

JAKARTA. Indonesia s central bank kept key interest rates unchanged at a record low on Thursday, as expected, holding fire after providing a bout of monetary stimulus last year to support the coronavirus-hit economy.
Bank Indonesia (BI) left the 7-day reverse repurchase rate at 3.75%, the lowest since the central bank began using it as its benchmark in 2016. A majority of analysts in a Reuters poll had expected rates to remain steady.
BI also kept its overnight deposit facility and lending facility rates at 3.00% and 4.50%, respectively.

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA. Indonesia is expected to ramp up gasoline imports this year to surpass 2019 pre-pandemic levels as Southeast Asia s biggest economy shrugs off the impact of curbs aimed at restricting coronavirus cases.
The largest gasoline importer in Asia is expected to import 140 million barrels of gasoline this year, up from an estimated 91 million barrels in 2020, official data presented by the country s energy ministry showed on Tuesday. The 2021 level would also surpass pre-pandemic imports of 119 million barrels in 2019.
This predicted spike in Indonesia s motor fuel imports could provide a boost to the region s refiners whose profit margins were pummelled by poor demand last year.

BANGKOK. Thailand s central bank left its key interest rate unchanged at a record low on Wednesday but downgraded its 2021 economic outlook as the tourism-reliant country deals with a fresh outbreak of coronavirus.
Southeast Asia s second-largest economy continues to recover, but downside risks remains high and it needs the low policy rate, the Bank of Thailand aid.
The BOT s monetary policy committee voted unanimously to keep the one-day repurchase rate unchanged at a record low of 0.50% for a fifth straight meeting, after three cuts earlier this year.
