To explore the Pluto-Charon system, NASA designed the small New Horizons probe and put it on one of the largest rockets, the Atlas V. When it left Earth, New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft ever, zooming to the end of the solar system at a speed of more than 58,000 km (36,000 miles) per hour. The dwarf planet Ceres in a photograph taken by NASA s Dawn spacecraft on February 19, 2015, from a distance of nearly 46,000 km (29,000 miles). It shows that the brightest spot on Ceres has a dimmer companion, which apparently lies in the same basin.
