UF professor s children s book on Shirley Chisholm nominated for NAACP award

Katheryn Russell-Brown s latest storybook, SHE WAS THE FIRST! The Trailblazing Life of Shirley Chisholm, has been named a finalist for the 2021 NAACP Image Awards. It is her second nomination by the organization, making her children s books two for three as recognized outstanding literature. The biography tells the story of a powerful Black woman   the first elected to the New York State Assembly and Congress and to run for president   who inspired a young Russell-Brown. She aims now to pass along that same awe, respect and confidence Chisholm brought her to other children. It s for young people who want their voice to be heard. There s room at the table for everyone like [Chisholm] says. They don t have a seat for you; bring your folding chair. Demand your seat, the 59-year-old said. This is really great and exciting for me.

The library will be hosting a month long celebration of Black History with several events and programs that will help educate and inspire you and your family. There will be an interactive activity at the Library where you explore history through the Green Book used by African Americans during the Jim Crow Laws era from 1936-1966 to find safe businesses and establishments that would serve African Americans. You can begin their journey in the Library Lobby by picking up an activity guide and then visiting historical locations listed in the Green Book at stations posted throughout the Library.
