Rick Wright: Sadly, a nice guy like Weir can indeed finish last

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... On Dec. 9, I was a guest on Henry Tafoya’s “GameFace Live” podcast. Inevitably, the conversation turned to University of New Mexico men’s basketball. After a turbulent and unsatisfying 2019-20 season, I was asked, what did I think lay ahead for coach Paul Weir and his program? Assuming the role of Kevin Bacon/Chip Diller from “Animal House,” I assured Henry T and his listeners that all was well. Weir was a fine young coach, I said, and a good recruiter. The future, I said, was – if not quite incandescent – bright enough. But, no. Friday night, two days after a dismal loss at Air Force that dropped the Lobos to 2-14 in Mountain West Conference play, UNM athletic director Eddie Nuñez pulled down the curtain on Weir’s four-year tenure.
