Mami Akiyama grew up in the city of Nara, Japan. At age 10, she and her family immigrated to Astoria, Queens. She is now the assistant to the chair of the Department of Astrophysical Sciences and a member of two Employee Resource Groups: Asian Staff at Princeton, where she is an officer, and the International Employee Group at Princeton.
