NRM scoops five youth positions

Summary According to the National Youth Council Act, a person shall be eligible to be elected a member of a youth committee if he or she has attained the age of 18 years and is less than 30 years. Advertisement The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party on Monday swept all the five youth slots across the country, exerting its supremacy over the budding youth-driven National Unity Platform (NUP) party. Youth elections are held through the electoral college system of voting. Under the system, only a few youth or voters, who are delegates, represent the majority voters.  Youth comprise 78 per cent of the country’s population.

The party meanwhile a week ago had its own Phionah Nyamutoro win the female national youth MP. Now from Monday’s poll, NRM’s Agnes Kirabo won the central youth Mp race after garnering 780 votes beating 11 other candidates including her closest rival, Independent Ivan Bwowe. In the Western youth MP race, NRMs Edson Rugamayo defeated six other contenders after garnering 1,419 votes beating his closest competitor independent Arnold Turwomwe who happens to be the son of minister Betty Kamya. In Mbale, NRM’s Bernard Odoi beat five others to be declared Eastern Youth MP while NRM’s Henry Okot is the Northern youth MP elect.
