MEED | Securing food for the future

Technology is transforming food production in the UAE as it drives its food security agenda, but adjusting consumer habits will be key to long-term success Even before the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the fragility of global supply chains, the UAE government had turned its attention to reducing the nation’s reliance on imports. In November 2018, Abu Dhabi launched the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051 to champion agribusiness trade and promote the technology-based production of food, known as agritech. “Agritech is one of the key drivers to enhance food security,” says UAE Minister of State for Food and Water Security Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri.

Greenhouses, Vertical Farming and Urban Ag: Controlled-Environment Agriculture Has Growth Potential

Natural disasters and extreme weather triggered by climate change present major challenges for feeding a hungry world whose global population is growing rapidly. A panel of experts recently discussed how controlled-environment agriculture — which spans greenhouse production, vertical farming and urban agriculture — can play a role in filling this need as the century unfolds. The webinar was held April 14 as part of the Cornell Business Impact Symposium. “I think CEA has a bright future,” said Henry Gordon-Smith, founder and CEO of Brooklyn, New York-based Agritecture. “The fundamentals of climate change and consumer demand for quality are in our favor. As a sector, growth will be most dramatic in regions where drivers for vertical farms, greenhouses and growing indoors, pesticide free with reduced water, are going to make the biggest difference.”

MEED | UAE aims for top status in global food security index by 2051

The UAE s goal is to increase food production by 30-40 per cent in 10 years The UAE’s aim to further enhance food security and attain number one ranking in the Global Food Security Index by 2051 were the key focus areas at a MEED webinar entitled ‘Agritech – Enhancing Food Security in the UAE’, organised by DP World, UAE Region and Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza). UAE Minister of State for Food and Water Security Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri (pictured right) delivered a keynote speech, emphasising that the efficiency of the food supply chain is a top priority for the UAE s leadership.
