요약 루이 14세는 루이 13세와 안 도트리슈 사이에서 뒤늦게 장남으로 태어났다. 1643년 루이 13세가 갑자기 사망하자 다섯 살밖에 안 되는 나이에 왕위에 올랐다. 어릴 적에는 재상 마자랭의 통치가 이어졌으나 프롱드 난으로 정치적 위기를 겪었다. 1661년부터 루이 14세는 재무대신 콜베르의 활약으로 친정을 시행하기 시작했고, 막대한 재정수입을 바탕으로 수많은 전쟁들과 건축 사업을 벌여 전례 없는 프랑스의 영광을 구현하고자 했다. 하지만 콜베르 사후 계속되는 전쟁과 낭트 칙령 폐지, 흉작과 기근 등으로 국가재정 상황은 최악으로 치달았고 아들과 손자들의 요절과 더불어 왕위를 증손자인 루이 15세에게 물려주고 사망하였다.
