Cuts at SFMOMA: Artists Gallery and film programs will close

Photo: Leah Millis / The Chronicle The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is dissolving several longstanding and well-known programs, The Chronicle has learned. Among the most notable changes are the closure of the Artists Gallery at Fort Mason Center, a program that was established in 1946. The gallery will close in December. The museum’s film program, which began in 1937 shortly after the opening of the museum, will close at the conclusion of the fall 2021 season. The museum’s “Open Space” and “Raw Material” podcasts also will end after their fall 2021 seasons and be reimagined as audio zines for online and in-gallery use. In total, the museum confirmed, the shuttered programs will result in seven eventual layoffs.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars program announces 2021 cohort

Share The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program, which funds graduate study at Stanford, has announced its 2021 cohort of 76 new scholars, including the first students to join the program from Bangladesh, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan.   Denning House, the convening hub of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program, offers spaces for large meals, quiet study, casual conversation, small seminars and group collaborations. (Image credit: Henrik Kam) Under the program, which provides up to three years of funding, students from 26 countries will join the Stanford community at the start of the 2021-22 academic year to begin graduate studies in 37 programs across campus. The scholars – the fourth Knight-Hennessy Scholars cohort – will also participate in the King Global Leadership Program, which strives to develop inspiring, visionary leaders who have strong cross-cultural perspectives and are committed to the greater good.

Photo: Santiago Mejia, The Chronicle The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is undertaking a new examination of the history of a dozen artworks in its collection, following a recent inquiry by a Northern California publication that raised questions about whether some of the institution’s holdings may have ties to Nazi-era art looting. The works, which date from the 15th to the 19th centuries, have gaps in their provenance (a detailed history of ownership) that can sometimes be a sign of theft. There is no evidence that these works were stolen, FAMSF spokeswoman Miriam Newcomer told The Chronicle on Monday.

Snøhetta Reveals Plans for Gallery Project in Adelaide and Art Centre Expansion in Hanover

Snøhetta will create the new Heysen Art Gallery in Adelaide- a rammed earth structure blending into the landscape and housing the works of renowned artists Hans and Nora Heysen. The studio was also selected to lead the expansion and re-design project for Dartmouth College Hopkins Center for the Arts, a vital creative hub for the New England Region. In late March, the Hans Heysen Foundation has revealed the design for the new art gallery, which will display the works of Australia’s most revered artists, Hans and Nora Heysen. Chosen from nine contenders, Snøhetta s project shows careful consideration of the landscape, featuring rammed earth walls as well as expansive glazing overlooking the natural setting.
