OCC To Host Three Commencement Ceremonies Saturday

SYRACUSE, NY – Onondaga Community College will celebrate its 58th commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 5 p.m. in the SRC Arena, located at Onondaga Community College, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215-4585. Over 400 students total will participate in the three ceremonies. These students completed their coursework in either the fall 2020, spring 2021, or summer 2021 semesters. To meet all social distance requirements the following procedures are in place. All event attendees, including members of the media, must have either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within three days of the ceremonies. Each student may bring a maximum of two guests.

Mohamed, a junior at Henninger High School, participated in National Geographic’s week-long photo camp earlier this year, which teaches students to use photojournalism to tell stories about themselves and their communities. The program is led by world-renowned photographers Andrea Bruce and David Guttenfelder, focusing on students’ perspectives on important issues. The program began in 2003 and has been run in over 35 countries. This year’s virtual camp focused on “Democracy in Action.” The group of students met on Zoom and held discussions on what democracy meant for them. For Mohamed, whose family left Somalia and lived in refugee camps in Ethiopia until she moved to the United States at age 11, a personal definition of democracy is important. Coming to America

Altman, 57, of Baldwinsville, died Tuesday, according to his obituary. Altman was a graduate of Henninger High School. He earned his associates degree from Onondaga Community College and completed his education at the University of Buffalo. He was an architectural draftsman with Bennetts & Huysman Architects in Manlius. Altman was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), but he maintained a positive attitude, his obituary said. He was very active as a member of the ALS Association, doing fundraising and advocacy.
